This route takes us across the southern end of the Malvern Hills to Ledbury, past Hereford cross country on some great roads to Crossgates where we'll be stopping for a cuppa, cake/bacon sarnie and fuel if needed. From there we'll ride to Rhayader and the start of the Elan Valley, up past the reservoirs and across the Rhayader to Aberystwyth mountain road to Devils Bridge for some lunch at either the Hafod Hotel or Two Hoots. After this we'll return via the A44 and A470 passing through Rhayader for a 2nd time and on to Newbridge on Wye before doing the Llanafan-fwar 'Roller Coaster' road to Beulah. From there across the military ranges; Garth to Upper Chapel and on into Brecon. From there it's the A40 to Abergavenny and then, to complete the day, the wonderful, twisty Skenfrith road to just before Ross-on-Wye where the ride will officially end. However, those heading in the direction of Cheltenham are welcome to follow.
The distance of the route is about 202 miles, please note that the end is not at the same location as the start.
Meet at Starbucks, next to the Ashchurch BP, for a 9:00am departure. Ensure that you get here ten minutes before 9:00, earlier if you need to fill up. There will be a short briefing before we start the ride. There is a scheduled stop at around 70 miles for fuel with another option at 130 miles if necessary. Only fuel at these if you need to, if you have the range to fill at only one please do so as it keeps things moving.
GPS routes can be downloaded from the links below (you need to register as a member on here to do so). GPX for Garmin and more recent TomToms, TRP for CoPilot. No guarantees of accuracy given or implied
With stops for views and lunch this should realistically see us at the end point, just outside Ross, at around 6-6:30pm. Food/tea/cake stops will be at Crossgates, Devils Bridge and a yet undecided location on the return leg. Bring a drink and some snacks for the various stops if you need more sustenance.
There will be an upper limit of 12 bikes to make this event manageable. Please post below if you wish to attend, places allocated in the order of responses. Steve has gallantly volunteered to be TEC (Tail End Charlie). If you would like to share this role with him, swapping part way though the day, it would be much appreciated by us both. A functioning GPS, if you don't know the area well, and a mobile phone (we'll exchange numbers) is all that's required.
Please note that this event is also on our meetup group and the number of places is shared across the two platforms. I will keep a tally above on how the total number of attendees is stacking up. Attendance is in order of response no matter which of the two platforms you use. By all means add yourself to both but please state in your post below that you have added yourself on Meetup too and provide your username so I can connect the dots. Let me know ASAP if I haven't recognised this as it could inadvertently deprive someone of a chance to join us.
If you do find yourself 'off the bottom of the attending list' then still post below that you'd like to come, or add yourself on meetup. People inevitably drop out, so keep an eye out here as you may get bumped to attending. This could happen at any time in the lead up to the ride.
If you put yourself down as attending and find that you are not able to come after all please post again stating that you're pulling out as soon as you can. Please do not just 'like the idea of coming' and the then either not show up or, unless you really can't help it, pull out the Friday evening before the ride as this will potentially take places from others who would have liked to have made it.
If you are willing to take a pillion on this ride, or you're an experienced pillion looking for a seat, please post below mentioning this.
NB. We will be using the drop off system, please familiarise yourself with this here.
NB. Please also read the GMSR&T Rideout Ts&Cs, your attendance on this event is conditional on you having read and agreed to these.
No guarantees but weather looking great
