Adding a Google Map to a post

Post by Charlie »

To add a Google Map to your post you will need to obtain a part of the address that Google Maps creates.

Create your map view as usual here. This can just be a location or a route, the zoom level you select should be incorporated into the finished map on your post.

Then click the hamburger menu at the top left of the Google Maps page and select 'Share or embed map' from the options.

A pop-up will appear with the option to 'Send a link' or 'Embed a map', chose 'Embed a map'.

Now click COPY HTML to copy the address of the map code, don't worry about the size, leave this on the default 'Medium' setting.

Open a text editor such as Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac) and paste in the map code from the above step.

Copy from this only the content from after ?pb= to the closing quotation mark ahead of width. See below for an example.

Then, from your post creation screen on GMSRT, click the map icon which will add the map BB code.

Paste the code extracted from the google address like in the image above between these opening and closing tags.

Once your preview or submit your post the map will be displayed as show below. This map is fully interactive in so much as the viewer can zoom, pan, change to Satellite View as well as view a larger map, this opens the Google Map in a new browser tab, where they can use all the features of a regular Google Map such as Street View etc.

Again, all far easier than these instructions imply.
